British psychologist and anthropologist of a diffusionist orientation. Participated in Cambridge University's Torres Expedition (1898) to Melanesia. Fieldwork among the Todas of South India (published in The Todas, 1906). Rivers made a pioneering attempt at forming a psychological anthropology and had a formative influence on his student Radcliffe-Brown.
