German neo-Marxian philosopher, social theorist and radical social critic. Considered to be the father of the New Left in Europe and the United States of the 1960's and 70's. In his famous book, One-Dimensional Man (1964), he formulated a theory of "advanced industrial society" (otherwise called "late capitalism"), in which the dominance of mass media, advertisement and new structures of industrial organization neutralized protest against the established order, reducing human beings to one-dimensional, power-dominated actors.
