Polish-American anthropologist. Ph.D. at Columbia University under Franz Boas, 1911. Fieldwork among Native Americans (Winnebago). Influential work on folklore, religion, language, psychology. Precursor of the Culture and Personality School (see Ruth Benedict). His pioneering work on biographical anthropology became an inspiration for American postmodernist anthropologists in the 1980's.
