British-South African anthropologist, one of the founders of the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute in what is today Zambia; later, professor at the University of Manchester, where he lead the Manchester school. Gluckman was an unusually influential teacher, whose students include Victor Turner, Bruce Kapferer, John Barnes, Elizabeth Colson and many others. In his work, Gluckman focused particularly on conflict and change, in the East African communities he studied, which were undergoing intensive "modernization", as a result of urbanization and a growing mining industry.
