Concept used e.g. by Barth, Berreman and Grønhaug to separate phenomena that have local (micro) relevance and phenomena with relevance on a macro-level, e.g. regionally. The transition from micro- og macro-level is gradual, moving from direct face-to-face interaction, to national or even global processes. In the history of anthropology, the concept of scale originated in the study of peasant societies, and the concept has later shown itself to be useful methodologically, e.g. in the study of development aid. (See hierarchic, evolutionism.)
