(Not to be confused with "fraction".) One of two political groups in permanent conflict. The continuity does not lie in the conflict itself, not in the content of the conflict, which may change over time. The formation of political "blocks" in Swat described by Barth (1959) may be described as a form of factions. Another author who has written about factions is Bailey.
