The study of or rules for how we understand the world and what constitutes a valid explanation. In contrast, ontology is the study of what it means to say that something exists. The distinction between ontology and epistemology is fundamental in philosophy. The concepts have been adapted for very different uses in anthropology, e.g. by Bateson (epistemology) and Kapferer (ontology).
