The goal of this article is to analyze the myth of Maria Lionza from the perspective of René Girard's mimetic theory. It begins by taking a quick revision of some of the accepted versions of the myth. Then, it takes on a brief structuralist view of the myth. Next, it presents an outline of Girard's central thesis, and finally, it analyzes the myth based on the tools provided by mimetic theory. It draws as a conclusion that the myth of Maria Lionza may be inspired upon a real girl murdered by her community.
El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el mito de María Lionza desde la perspectiva de la teoría mimética de René Girard. Comienza con una simple revisión de algunas de las versiones más aceptadas del mito. Luego, emprende una breve aproximación estructuralista del mito. Presenta un resumen de la tesis central de Girard, y finalmente, analiza el mito en base a las herramientas que aporta la teoría mimética. Saca como conclusión que el mito de María Lionza puede estar inspirado en una joven sacrificada por su comunidad.
